One of the oldest counties in the world, Mongolia reached its
height of power in the 13th Century when Genghis Khan and his
successors conquered all of China and as far west as Poland and
Hungary. Eventually, Mongolia fell to the domination of the
Chinese. Mongolia became independent, with the help of Russia
during the 1911 Chinese revolution. A Mongolian Communist regime
was established on July 11, 1921. Previously a nomadic culture,
most Mongols are now farmers with a growing industrial base.
Mongolia has sided with the U.S.S.R in the Sino-Soviet dispute
and some 60,000 Soviet troops are based in the country. @
